Mr. Wilson Ekhomogiazin, Branch Secretary, NRCS, Edo State chapter, disclosed this while addressing Journalists in Benin.

He said Red Cross Society has chosen to groom young people into how to render humanitarian services to those that are in need, adding that, as those in the voluntary organization are growing older, it is incumbent on them to groom younger ones who are to takeover from them.

“Over 426 person are be trained on first aid, disaster management, and leadership training in this camp. These are the ones that will take over from us. You can see when you look around, you see the ages of persons who will be in this camp for the next seven days. We are building their leadership skills.

“We are strengthening their first aid skills and then, you know, building their first aid knowledge to respond to emergency because we know for sure that these are the future and when we get it right now, we are sure that the future is bright for everyone of us”, Ekhomogiazin said.

Mr. Ekhomogiazin said that today’s celebration is to passionately appeal to those in the healthcare sector to take the issues of emergency seriously and to place more premium on saving life rather than the unnecessary bureaucracy that may eventually lead to the death of the person in a dire need of medical attention.

“So, today is World Humanitarian Day and it is a day to acknowledge and recognize humanitarian workers as they continue with humanitarian works. And some of these persons, are not paid.

“Some of them risk their life and you know, they keep on doing what they believe in. A day like this is to recognize and appreciate their commitment to the service of humanity.

“While we recognize and appreciate all the good works these persons and group of persons have done, we must also condemn in strong terms some of the activities, not necessarily we just want to condemn where we see healthcare in danger.

“Healthcare can be in danger when a doctor or a nurse or any other worker is kidnapped. You know, when an health facility is being destroyed, a doctor or a nurse or any other is being molested.

“All of these represent what we call healthcare being in danger. When ambulances are being blown up, these actions represent healthcare being in danger.

“But what we condemn that. We don’t support such actions. We only want to ask for the perpetrators to have a rethink. As some of these actions could have even affected members of their immediate family.

“We also want to appeal to our brothers, our sisters, particularly those who are in the health sector. You know, when cases of emergencies are brought before us, we don’t need to wait for family members. We don’t just need to wait for family relative before we commence treatment.

“I think the right thing to do should be stabilizing the accident victim or those injured as the case may be.

“Those that are brought before us in the hospital, let us see how we can stabilize them before we begin to look for family members.

“So, today, it is an opportunity for us to have a reflection of what we do”, Ekhomogiazin said.

Speaking also, former chairman of the NRCS, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, appealed to Nigerians to shun the act of videoing accident victims but should spend their time to save the victim.

Alenkhe who is the current chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State council urged the members not to relent in rendering humanitarian services but should see it as a way of life.
