Nigeria has 51 universities, which have been ranked by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026.
Published on THE’s website on Thursday, the list was released after a survey involving 2,191 institutions from 115 countries, with assessment based on 18 performance indicators across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.
Below is a list of the top seven Nigerian universities ranked by their national position.
1. University of Ibadan
Popularly called UI, this varsity is known to be the country’s oldest. It was established in 1948 in Oyo State. It reclaimed the top spot in 2026 after finishing fourth in 2025.
The university excels in academic excellence and research output.
2. University of Lagos (UNILAG)
The vibrant federal university surged into second place after UI and is renowned for its programs in business, law, and engineering, with strong industry ties in Africa’s commercial hub.
3. Bayero University
Abbreviated to BUK, the institution is based in Kano State and holds third place.
Standing out for its international outlook and attracting diverse scholars and students, it offers robust programs which add significantly to the northern Nigeria’s educational landscape.
4. Covenant University
Covenant University is based in Ogun State, Nigeria. It previously topped Nigerian rankings for two years.
It is currently the fourth on the list and known for emphasising entrepreneurship and STEM fields to prepare graduates for the global/ outer markets.
5. Landmark University
The university is situated in Kwara State and is praised for being a private faith-based institution.
It was founded in 2011 and majorly focuses on programs like agriculture, engineering, and sustainable development, with teaching methods that integrate faith.
6. Ahmadu Bello University
ABU is currently occupies sixth place and is based in Zaria, Kaduna State.
It shines in veterinary medicine, agriculture, and engineering, with extensive research facilities supporting food security and regional development strategies.
7. Federal University of Technology, Minna
Popularly known as FUTMINNA, it is based in Minna, Niger State and is placed seventh on the list.
It solely focuses on technology and innovation, computing, engineering, and entrepreneurial skills, fostering practical skills through labs and industrial collaborations.
