Shehu Sani seeks Ohanaeze’s intervention to protect Nigerians in Ghana

By John Ogunsemore

Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani has urged apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo to wade in and help douse rising tensions between Nigerians in Ghana and their hosts.

According to Sani, Ohanaeze’s intervention would help complement steps being taken by the Nigerian and Ghanaian governments to maintain a cordial relationship between citizens of both nations.

Sani made the appeal in an X post on Tuesday.

On July 29, a “Nigerians Must Go” protest rocked parts of Ghana as some locals demanded the expulsion of Nigerians over allegations of rising crime, including prostitution, ritual killings, and economic dominance.

This is just as Nigerians in the West African nation accused some of their hosts of long-standing discrimination, economic sabotage, and deep-seated resentment against them.

The protest threatened to sever longstanding diplomatic, economic and cultural ties between both nations.

However, Ghanaian President John Mahama assured Nigerians in his country of their safety.

Receiving President Bola Tinubu’s special envoy led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu in the Presidential Palace, Accra, Mahama noted that there was no place for xenophobia in Ghana.

In Tuesday’s post, Sani disclosed that Ghanaians were not saying pleasant things about Nigerians in their country.

He advised the leadership of Ohanaeze to meet the Ghanaian community in Nigeria and also visit Ghana to assuage the fears of both sides.

Sani said, “I received and watched a lot of videos from Ghanaians against Nigerians. The content is “not nice”.

“My advice is that in addition to what our Government should do,I advise the leadership of Ohan(a)eze to meet with the Ghanaian community in Nigeria and also travel to Ghana to address their fears and issues they raised,so that normalcy can return between our two brotherly countries.”
