President Bola Tinubu has been urged to free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, from prison by the South East Youth Stakeholders Forum, a coalition of youth organizations from the South East geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
Following extensive talks on the current problems impacting the Southeast Region, the group called an emergency meeting on Saturday and requested presidential intervention in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s protracted incarceration.
“As the father of the country and a detribalized Nigerian, we implore His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to order the Attorney General of the Federation to halt Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s prosecution in order to free him from prison.
“We think this is a crucial step in addressing the South East’s ongoing security issues. We think his release will bring an end to the insecurity that has plagued the southeast, promote true healing, and calm tensions in the region,” the group promised.
Representatives from the five southeast states, led by Mazi Ezenwa Onyirimba, the chairman for Enugu State, made the point in a communique that Kanu’s release will foster positive dialogue and interaction with some of the youths in the region who have taken up arms against the state.
