The Joint Action Committee (JAC), made up of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-academics Staff Union (NASU), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), led by Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, non-recognised executives by ASUU national and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), directed LASU workers to down tools.

Saturday Sun gathered that the decision to embark on the indefinite strike was taken by JAC after a meeting convened by LASU management ended in a deadlock on Thursday afternoon.

However, the National Executive Council (NEC) recognised ASUU-LASU branch executive told Saturday Sun that its members are not on strike but sympathise with the agitation of the Non-academic staff.

One of the chairmen of the unions said the indefinite strike is about the welfare of members and unresolved demands, which LASU management and the state government have failed to implement.

When our Correspondent visited the Ojo campus on Friday, academic and administrative activities were grounded with students wandering around with no lecturers or non-teaching staff to attend to their needs.

The Joint Action Committee, in a letter to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello and dated Thursday, July 31st, 2025, informed the VC of the staff unions’ decision to embark on an indefinite strike.

The two-page letter, titled: “Notice of Indefinite Strike Action” was signed by the factional ASUU-LASU chairman, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, his Secretary, Dr. Sylvester Idowu, SSANU-LASU chairman, Oluwaseyi Lawal, the Secretary, Waheed Majekodunmi, chairman of NAAT, Dr. Olujimi Adejo,  his Secretary, Adewunmi Fadiora, NASU chairman, Obafemi Sanni and the Secretary, Muhammed Kelani.

In the letter to the VC, the staff unions insisted they would not call off the strike until the university management and the state government implemented their demands.

The letter reads: “Sequel to the decision reached at the emergency congress of JAC of LASU staff unions (ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU & NASU-LASU) that an indefinite strike action should commence effective from Thursday, July 31, 2025, we write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has commenced in LASU.

‘The strike action will remain in force indefinitely until all the demands of staff members are met by the appropriate authorities.

“Consequently, all members of staff of the university and its affiliate campuses (LASUCOM and LASU Epe Campus) are hereby directed to withdraw their services and vacate their official duty posts with immediate effect.

“While we thank you for your kind gesture and support always, please accept the assurances of the unions’ kindest regards.”

A member of SSANU told Saturday Sun that the discussion on the unresolved demands has been on five months ago and the Thursday meeting with the management ended without any agreement.

A member of ASUU-LASU recognised by the national body said its members are not on strike, adding, “ASUU don’t go on strike until the congress takes the decision. The resolution is taken to the Zone, which in turn sends the outcome to NEC.”

According to her, “ASUU NEC may send delegates to meet the university management. The delegates bring feedback to NEC. In the wisdom of NEC, they may ask the branch to proceed on strike or wait for further discussion with the management.”
