Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen expressed his wish that Victor Boniface had found the net in the match against St. Pauli.
Bremen proved to be the stronger team in this classic northern clash, getting off to a fantastic start by taking the lead just two minutes into the game.
Jens Stage passed the ball to the right flank, where Justin Njinmah attempted a cross that was blocked.
The rebound fell perfectly to Mbangula, who delivered a clinical low finish into the bottom corner from 18 yards out.
Bremen could have secured all three points, but Boniface (24) missed a golden opportunity to clinch the victory in injury time. After being substituted in the final moments, he had a clear chance at goal (90+3) but, while cutting back onto his right foot inside the box, he dragged his shot wide.
Steffen shared his thoughts on the Nigerian striker: “Victor did his job, and I would have loved to see him score, which was certainly possible. He performed well, but he was just a few centimetres short, I wasn’t dissatisfied with his performance.”
