From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has admonished residents of Karu and environs to support leaders with the capacity to deliver the dividends of democracy, particularly tangible development, rather than those whose only stock in trade is to engage in empty rhetoric.
He stated this during the flag-off of a water project for Karu, Orozo, Kurudu and adjoining settlements in Abuja. “Support those who have the capacity to bring something to the people, not those who only go on television to talk.”

He also said leadership must be measured by impact, adding that under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the FCT has witnessed road infrastructure and is now prioritising potable water for satellite towns.
He assured the people that the government would in no distant time, embark on the construction of the two-kilometre Karu site road, and attributed the pledge to his close working relationship with Senator Philip Aduda, who had openly advocated for the project.
“Consider it done,” Wike told the communities who gathered for the flag-off. Speaking further, the minister hailed the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) for facilitating several road projects across the council and urged residents to continue supporting leaders who can secure development for their communities.
“This government made promises and today, you can see them being fulfilled. Unlike those who stayed in power for years and did nothing, President Tinubu’s administration is here to provide what you were denied for decades,” he also said.
Stating the importance of the water project, he asked: “Water is life? Water is even more important than roads because we cannot do without water. By the special grace of God, by June next year, we will come back here, and you will all get the treated water. You will no longer depend on unsafe boreholes.”
He also told the people of Karu and environs that President Tinubu had approved 60 percent advance payment to the contractor, a move that will reduce the project timeline from 18 months to June 2026.
In her remarks, the FCT Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud, said water was one of the most essential resources for life and development.
“It sustains human health, supports agriculture, drives industry and maintains ecosystems,” she said, while extending the Administration’s profound appreciation to President Tinubu for translating the Renewed Hope Agenda into tangible projects that directly benefit rural communities,” Mahmoud said.
Also speaking, the acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Yunana Dauda, said the Karu Water Project was a strategic infrastructure initiative aligned with the Abuja Master Plan.
He also said the project was part of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project commissioned in June and awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited and designed to expand access to potable water for residents of Karu, Kurudu, Jikwoyi and other neighbouring communities in AMAC, while also creating jobs. “The project involves site clearance, excavation, supply and integration of about 195 kilometres of pipeline, with diameters ranging from 60mm to 600mm, along with the necessary fittings. When completed, it will significantly improve the health and wellbeing of residents.”
He further called for the cooperation of local communities to ensure the smooth and timely delivery of the project, which he said, would provide both direct and indirect job opportunities during implementation.
