Political thugs reportedly attacked the convoy of the immediate past Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Chika Malami.

It was learnt that the incident occurred shortly after Malami returned to the state on Monday and embarked on a condolence visit to several areas in the metropolis.

Victims of the attack, Hon. A.B Sabi, representing Birnin Kebbi House Assembly and others, spoke via videos made available to newsmen, confirmed the attack and disclosed that about 10 vehicles were destroyed during the attack, while several supporters of the former minister sustained various degrees of injuries.

In his reaction to the incident, Abubakar Malami (SAN) explained that he was in Birnin Kebbi to pay condolences to prominent individuals who had passed away during his absence and not for political campaigning.

He said, “It’s a painful act clearly linked to politics. Some thugs came out from the APC state headquarters armed with dangerous weapons and stones, attacking and destroying our convoy,” Malami alleged.

“The truth is, when it comes to politics in Kebbi State, there is no retreat, no surrender.”

But the All Progressives Congress (APC) Kebbi State Publicity Secretary, Isa Assalafi, denied the party’s involvement in the attack and strongly condemned the incident.

He said: “Kebbi is a peaceful state. No government that enjoys massive support from the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want the peace of the state to be disrupted,”.

He accused security personnel attached to Malami’s convoy of opening fire during the confrontation, which he claimed escalated the situation.

While speaking with newsmen after a security meeting with the Governor, Kebbi Commissioner of Police, Sani Bello, said that the incident is still under investigation and no arrest has been made so far.

“The reason for the Governor to summon the security meeting was about one incident that happened around GRA by some thugs of a political party, and also some political parties are violating the ban on the siren and the issue of political campaign.

“That is why we want to invite the political party for a meeting to discuss it, because there is no lifting of the ban on political campaigns. We have already set up security to enforce the ban on political campaigns. We have appealed to the political parties to remain calm.”

Responding to a question on any arrest being made, Sani only said, “The case is still under investigation, and whoever is found guilty would be arrested.”
