Tinubu approves firm for dredging of Calabar Port – Senator Adeyeye

From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar

The Board Chairman of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, said President Bola Tinubu has granted an approval for a Channel Management Company to tackle the challenge of dredging at the Calabar Port.

Senator Adeyeye made the disclosure after concluding a tour of the Calabar Port and also interfacing with stakeholders. He explained that the president has been holistically addressing problems previous administrations failed to tackle, one of which is the Calabar Port.

With the new approval, he said the problem of dredging of the Calabar Port will be permanently addressed, and it’s not just a game changer but a paradigm shift for the port.

“Fortunately, President Tinubu is transforming every sector of the country and tackling challenges head on.

“One of these is the issue of dredging at the Calabar Port, which is being addressed holistically by the approval to have a Calabar Channel Management Company, which will be in charge of making sure that the channel is dredged constantly and maintained.

“This will ensure that the issue of sporadic award of contracts and challenges of dredging will be a thing of the past as they will manage it constantly to ensure ships can come here. This is a game changer and a paradigm shift, which will change the whole situation here and make the Calabar Port become vibrant to create more economic activities”, he said.

Senator Adeyeye decried the present state of the port, saying it contributed only 2.7% to the entire port system, given its strategic location as a gateway to the South South, North Central and North East as well as a gateway to the entire West and Central Africa.

He said the Calabar Port should be one of the best performing ports, but it’s not performing to its optimal level and with the new policy in place, the challenges of the port will be a thing of the past.
