President Bola Tinubu has landed in Katsina State to receive the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away Sunday in a London hospital at 82.
The presidential jet touched down at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Airport, Katsina, at 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, where Governor Dikko Umar Radda and other senior officials greeted him.
Tinubu’s arrival marks the start of official burial ceremonies for the late leader, with interment scheduled for later Tuesday in Buhari’s hometown of Daura, following Islamic traditions.
Earlier reports from Voice of Nigeria indicated that prominent Nigerians, including current and former governors, ministers, and sympathizers, gathered at Buhari’s Daura residence awaiting his remains.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Deputy Chief of Staff Ibrahim Hadejia, Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Borno Governor Babagana Zulum, and others accompanied the body and Buhari’s family from London.
Tinubu ordered the vice president and chief of staff to lead the federal delegation.
Buhari was Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985, then served as democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. President Tinubu paid tribute calling Buhari “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman committed to Nigeria’s unity and progress.”
