President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Professor Jonah Isawa Elaigwu, a celebrated political science scholar and President of the Institute of Governance and Social Research (IGSR), who passed away on Tuesday, July 22, at the age of 77.

In a statement signed by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the late professor’s family, friends, and professional associates, as well as to the people and governments of Benue and Plateau states, mourning a distinguished academic whose contributions to constitutional democracy, political economy, and federalism are widely respected.

“Professor Elaigwu’s patriotism, loyalty, and dedication fuelled his passion for advancing knowledge through research, teaching, and training for over five decades,” the President remarked. “His work at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the University of Jos, alongside his engagements at universities worldwide, has left an indelible mark on political science scholarship in Nigeria and beyond.”

He noted that Elaigwu’s illustrious career included service on presidential committees and educational boards, as well as advisory roles for federal and state governments and legislative bodies. He was also a trusted consultant to international organisations such as the World Bank, UNDP, USAID, DFID, and the British Council.

President Tinubu concluded, “We pray that Almighty God grants Professor Elaigwu eternal rest and provides comfort to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

The late professor’s legacy includes numerous influential papers on topics ranging from peacekeeping and human rights to democracy and good governance.
