Resident doctors at University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan have commenced an indefinite strike over the partial restoration of electricity in their residential quarters.
Key Issues
- The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD UCH), through its General Secretary Dr. Uthman Adedeji, confirmed the strike on Monday.
- While the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) reconnected UCH last Wednesday after a 100-day blackout, only some residential areas regained power.
- ARD had previously issued a strike ultimatum demanding full electricity restoration by 4 p.m. on Monday.
Doctors’ Response
- After an Emergency General Meeting (EGM), the association observed that some quarters remained in darkness, leading to the indefinite strike.
- “We acknowledge the efforts of UCH management, but a lot still needs to be done to guarantee uninterrupted service delivery,” Adedeji stated.
- The association will continue reviewing the welfare situation until their demands are met.
Implications
- The strike disrupts healthcare services at one of Nigeria’s major hospitals.
- Patients may face delays in consultations, surgeries, and other medical procedures.
- UCH management is expected to intervene to resolve the power crisis and prevent prolonged disruptions.
