UCH Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike Over Power Outage

Resident doctors at University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan have commenced an indefinite strike over the partial restoration of electricity in their residential quarters.

Key Issues

  • The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD UCH), through its General Secretary Dr. Uthman Adedeji, confirmed the strike on Monday.
  • While the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) reconnected UCH last Wednesday after a 100-day blackout, only some residential areas regained power.
  • ARD had previously issued a strike ultimatum demanding full electricity restoration by 4 p.m. on Monday.

Doctors’ Response

  • After an Emergency General Meeting (EGM), the association observed that some quarters remained in darkness, leading to the indefinite strike.
  • “We acknowledge the efforts of UCH management, but a lot still needs to be done to guarantee uninterrupted service delivery,” Adedeji stated.
  • The association will continue reviewing the welfare situation until their demands are met.

Implications

  • The strike disrupts healthcare services at one of Nigeria’s major hospitals.
  • Patients may face delays in consultations, surgeries, and other medical procedures.
  • UCH management is expected to intervene to resolve the power crisis and prevent prolonged disruptions.
