UN condemns killing of over 50 civilians in Bama, Borno

From Billy Graham Abel, Yola

The United Nations has strongly condemned the killing of more than 50 civilians in an attack on Darajamal Village, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, describing it as a tragic reminder of the worsening insecurity in Nigeria’s northeast.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, said he was “deeply appalled and saddened” by the attack, which occurred on Friday evening when suspected non-state armed group fighters stormed the community. Preliminary reports indicate that scores of people were killed, several others abducted, and at least 28 houses set ablaze. Many residents also fled with injuries, while the casualty figure is expected to rise as more information emerges.

“Civilians should never be a target. On behalf of the United Nations in Nigeria, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed and affected, to the government and people of Borno State, and I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Fall said.

He called on security agencies to urgently apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice, while also demanding the immediate release of abducted villagers.

The UN Coordinator warned that the killings form part of a grim pattern of rising violent attacks in Borno this year. Hundreds of civilians, including farmers, fishermen, travellers, traders, and displaced persons, have lost their lives in similar assaults involving suicide bombings, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and targeted raids.

Neighbouring Adamawa and Yobe states have also witnessed deadly strikes in recent months, with health centres, grain stores, and markets among the facilities attacked.

Fall reiterated his appeal to all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian and human rights laws by safeguarding civilians and their property.

The UN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting conflict-affected populations and complementing government efforts to provide relief.
