…Distributes 3,700 delivery kits to pregnant women
From Timothy Olanrewaju, Maiduguri
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has decried the maternal and child mortality situation in Borno State.
The UNICEF new Chief of Maiduguri Field Office, Francis Busiku, made the disclosure in Maiduguri, during the distribution of delivery kits (Mama Kits) to 13 Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiative (MAMII) priority local government areas in the state.
According to him, “Borno State has been identified as one of the states in Nigeria that contributes a significant proportion to maternal and neonatal mortality. Everyday women face life-threatening risks for bringing new life into the world.”
He stated that one woman dies giving birth in every eight minutes.
“These are not just numbers, they are mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, compatriots and future leaders lost to preventable causes,” he said
He explained that UNICEF donated the 3,700 Mama kits, which contained essential delivery items for clean and safe childbirth of pregnant women in the state. He added that the intervention is part of efforts to reduce maternal and newborn mortality.
Busiku urged all stakeholders, including the government, traditional leaders, civil society, and development partners to unite in action to scale up the MAMII.
“Let us remember: every safe birth is a victory, every mother saved is a future secured and every newborn alive is a promise kept,” he declared.
