UNILAG: Law faculty wins maiden GST competition

The Faculty of Law, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has emerged the winner of the maiden edition of the General Studies Day quiz competition, beating 24 other contestants.

The event was organised by the Centre for General Studies of the university with the theme: “The Future of e-Learning” and it involves undergraduates of 12 faculties and Distance Learning Institute (DLI), two each contested for the competition.

In the first round of the competition, eight faculties scored as follows, Arts 49.5, Engineering 50; Law 51.6, Basic Medical Sciences 51.6; Environmental Sciences 51.5; Science 54.7 and Social Sciences 55.3.

After the first round, five faculties were eliminated from the contest and in the second round, three faculties were also eliminated, they are Arts; Engineering and Social Sciences.

In the final round, the Law faculty won the competition, 1st runner-up went to the Faculty of Science and 2nd runner-up to the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

The first prize of N200, 000 and a trophy was presented to the Faculty of Law by the Chairman, ISL Management Board, UNILAG, Prof. Bolajoko Dixon-Ugbechi, supported by the Director, Centre for General Studies, Prof. Aderonke Lawal-Are, Mrs. Ediri Ise-Ediale, Lead Psychotherapist and other dignitaries.

The 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Environmental Sciences went home with N150, 000 and N100, 000 respectively.

In her remarks, the Director of the General Studies Centre, Prof. Lawal-Are, said the unit plays a pivotal role in shaping not just students academic journey, but also their overall development as individuals and future leaders.

“Now, many students often ask, why do we take General Studies courses when they are not part of our core discipline? The answer is simple but profound: education is not just about specializing in your course; it is also about versatility, integration, transformation, and enlightenment,” she stated.

According to her, GST introduces students to a wide spectrum of disciplines, ranging from philosophy, logic, and communication to Nigerian peoples and culture, science, entrepreneurship, and technology.

Said she: “It helps you look beyond the narrow focus of your major and opens your mind to diverse ways of thinking.”

Lawal-Are explained that the General Studies Day was established as a platform to reignite students’ interest and engagement in key foundational courses.

The director advised students to approach General Studies with an open mind and a willing heart, adding, “don’t see it as a burden. See it as an opportunity, an opportunity to grow, not just as a student, but as a person, and more importantly, as a well-grounded citizen.”

The President, Worldwide of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Engr. Ifeoluwa Oyedele, charged the students to focus on being the best in whatever they aspire to do and described GST courses as remarkable courses for any students.

Oyedele, who also doubled as the Father of the Day, encouraged students to look beyond the narrow focus of their specialist courses and embrace the opportunity for a versatility of mind that GST courses afford you.

The Lead Psychotherapist Recharge Life Centre, Mrs. Ise-Ediale, spoke on mental health issues and advised students to change their configuration bias.

The Chief Marketing Officer, Sterling Bank, Mr. Maurice Igugu, spoke on job career and that many of the graduates will find themselves in work places unrelated to the certificate they acquired.
