A Professor of Nursing Science, Prof. Adesola Ogunfowokan, has lamented incessant attack on medical workers, especially in the warring nations of the world, noting that Nurses deserve care and not killing.

Prof. Ogunfowokan who is a lecturer in the Nursing Science department of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, spoke on “Nursing beyond borders: Unconventional career path,” during the 4th induction of Nurses at Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, on Thursday.

She noted that the work of Nurses is to go to other countries to save lives, urging the newly inducted 82 Nurses not to be discouraged by challenges in the world.

“It is very pathetic to see the way Nurses are being attacked. If I leave my comfort zone, I leave my bed, I leave my family to go and care for you, why must you now put my life in danger? Why must my life be in danger?

“But however, for Nurses without boarder, they know there is a risk, and they still go ahead to go and face that risk. So when you are going, you know that you are going to impact life, to touch life, to comfort them, to care for them, but there is a risk, because anything can happen to you. And that is what they are choosing to pursue.

“We have more of war, we have more natural disasters, all this war you are hearing about, the one in Gaza, the one in the Republic of Congo, the one in Iran, the one in Ukraine, even in Nigeria here, there are communal clashes, go to those settings, go and touch life and give them medical care, give them psychological care, health care, and advocate for many things that those people might need,” Ogunfowokan said.

Commenting on the exodus of Nurses, the university lecturer said the environment is not optimal for Nurses and leaving the country becomes necessary for those who could not endure the situation.

The Vice-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Professor Shadrach Akindele, urged the newly inducted Nurses to explore the boundless opportunities that lie ahead, saying “I charge you to render your services with the highest level of professionalism imbued with empathy, tenderheartedness, and godliness.”

The Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Alh. Ndagi Al-Hassan, who was represented by Hassan Abdulahi, urged the new Nurses to uphold the ethics of the profession and be a good representative of Nurses.
