A stream of tributes has poured in for the national women’s football team, known as the Super Falcons, after they defeated Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses 3-2 in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final on Saturday in Rabat.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo says the victory has rekindled Nigeria’s national pride.

He expressed pride in the Super Falcons team’s performance and their handlers.
He particularly commended three Imo daughters, who were part of the team, namely Chiamaka Nnadozie, the goalkeeper, Michelle Alozie, a defender, and Osinachi Ohale, also a defender.
“These players made significant contributions that brought honor to their country. They have continued to be shining examples of excellence and resilience, making Imo State and Nigeria immensely proud.
“Their outstanding performance inspires our younger generations, and we salute them as true role models.
“We eulogise our indefatigable players for their energy, resilience and unity, which played a vital role in this triumphant journey.
“We also applaud the Technical and Management Team for their strategic leadership.
“This well-deserved victory answers the call of President Bola Tinubu, in his goodwill message to the team ahead of the final. It also rekindles national pride.
“As you soar, know that Nigeria stands solidly behind you,” the governor said.
Bianca Ojukwu
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, described the Super Falcons as Nigeria’s strongest ambassadors.
The Minister had, before the match, made a viral video encouraging the team to go all out and bring the trophy home.
In the morale-booster message, Odumegwu-Ojukwu declared them formidable, indisputable and strongest ambassadors of the nation.
“Fired by the typical Nigerian spirit, you came into the second half of the match and stamped your authority in every department, dominated it, not minding vociferous supporters of the opponent.
“Truth is you clearly displayed the heart of true champions; exceptional character-discipline, resilience, unity of purpose and the mission was emphatically accomplished to the consternation of the host.
“You are our immutable and strongest ambassadors. I thank you for once again, making Nigeria proud,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu said.
Labour Party
The Labour Party in a congratulatory message issued by the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, said the record setting title was a remarkable achievement by the Super Falcons and a testament to the resilience, courage and indomitable spirit that defined Nigerians both at home and in the Diaspora.
“At a time when the nation is weighed down by hardship, hopelessness and a deluge of disheartening headlines, this uplifting victory brings a much-needed ray of hope and inspiration to our people.
“It is our firm belief that this win is more than just a sporting feat – it is a symbolic reminder of what is possible when determination meets purpose.
“May this moment of national pride herald the beginning of a new chapter of glory and resurgence in our country’s collective journey, despite the suffering and setbacks caused by failed leadership.

Obi hails Super Falcons outstanding performance
Mr Peter Obi, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra, in his congratulatory message posted on his X handle, said they were not the first to get it done but the best to ever do it.
According to him, congratulations to our outstanding Super Falcons of Nigeria for becoming the African Women’s Football Champions and winning the 2025 WAFCON.
I watched as our girls never gave up, just as I said before the game, it was an exemplary display of the indomitable Naija spirit.
“This is more than a win, you have shown true dominance in African football.
“From every Nigerian heart across the world, we say thank you for making us proud.
“Today, history bows to their greatness. congratulations, super falcons, mission done and dusted,” he said.
Shaibu
Director General/ Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports, (NIS) Philip Shaibu has once again congratulated the Super Falcons for their superlative performance.
The immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State and NIS boss who fulfilled his promised of going to Morocco to cheer up the Nigeria ladies in the finals match showdown held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco were Nigeria defeated the host nation after a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory, said the Super Falcons have once again etched their name in African football history.
The ex- Bendel Insurance player commended the technical crew of the Super Falcons, the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation and the Mallam Shehu Dikko led National Sports Commission for their efforts in achieving the set target of Mission X.
The win marks Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title, extending their record as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.

Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has hailed Nigeria’s Super Falcons over their 10th triumph at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing the victory as a moment of “immense national pride”.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, on Sunday, he praised the Super Falcons for once again lifting the continental trophy in grand style.
Nigeria defeated host nation Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final at the Rabat Olympic Stadium on Saturday, reclaiming the title in a pulsating match that showcased grit, flair, and the signature dominance of the nine-time African champions. The win adds a 10th star to the team’s continental record, reaffirming their status as the most successful national team in African women’s football history.
“I congratulate the Super Falcons and indeed all Nigerians on our team’s historic victory at the 2025 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Africa Cup of Nations,” the Deputy Senate President said.

Barau, who is also the founder of the Barau Football Club, which was recently promoted to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after a stellar performance at the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoffs, commended the team’s consistency and discipline throughout the tournament.
“The Super Falcons have again proven that Nigeria remains dominant in African women’s football. Their determination, discipline, and passion throughout the tournament are commendable. It inspires a new generation of Nigerian girls to believe in the power of their dreams,” he said.
He also extended commendation to the coaching crew, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), and all stakeholders who played a role in the team’s preparation and success.
“They have given us joy, and it is our duty as a nation to match their sacrifices with adequate support and infrastructure. This is not just a sports victory, it is a cultural and national triumph,” Barau said.
