The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has commenced the marking of scripts of 1.9million candidates who wrote the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The acting Head of Public Affairs Officer, Moyosola Adesina, confirmed to the Daily Sun that examiners have started to mark the scripts of the students that wrote the school exam.
The image-maker of the council did not disclose how many examiners are involved in the marking of the scripts.
Daily Sun learnt that Lagos State has the highest marking venues for the school examination.
The marking of the answer scripts of the May/June 2025 WASSCE has brighten the chance of an early release of the results.
Also, candidates for admissions into tertiary institutions require the results and they sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as awaiting results candidates.
The marking of the answer scripts and early release of the results would brighten the chances of candidates seeking admissions into the universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
WAEC Head of National Office (HNO), Dr. Amos Dangut, had on Thursday, April 17th, 2025, disclosed that the school exam would take place between Thursday, April 24 and Friday, June 20, 2025, for eight weeks and one day.
Dangut disclosed that 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 secondary schools presented candidates for the school exam.
He said 979,228 candidates are males, representing 49.63%, while 994,025 candidates are females, which is 50.37% of the total candidature.
“The statistics show a further increase in the number of females and males, respectively, compared to last year. However, on the roll, the candidacy for this year increased by 158,627 candidates, they would be examined in 74 subjects, made up of 196 papers.”
Dangut explained that about 26,000 practising senior secondary school teachers, nominated by various ministries of education, participated in the examination as supervisors.
On the release of results, he said: “Our usual practice has been, the results of candidates sitting the examination will be released 45 days after the conduct of the last paper, while awarded certificates will be printed and issued to schools in less than 90 days after the release of results.”
The HNO further stressed that candidates ‘results will be released along with the digital copies of candidates’ certificate, which can be accessed on the Digital Certificate platform.
In a related development, over 650,000 candidates wrote the 2025 UTME as awaiting results applicants.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) allowed awaiting results candidates to sit for the UTME but warned that they must upload their O’level results on the board’s portal before the start of the admission exercise.
In the 2025 UTME, 2,031,754 candidates applied for admissions into the universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and NID.
JAMB said awaiting results candidates who scored 200 and above are 170,908, candidates that obtained 160 and above are 421,656 and those who scored 100 and above are 491,838.
