Special Adviser on Transportation to Lagos State governor, Sola Giwa, has said the Lagos State Traffic Safety Advocacy Programme (LASTSAP) was designed to galvanise the critical faculties of young minds across the state. He made the disclosure at the grand finale of a statewide inter-school essay competition, held at the SUBEB Hall, Maryland, Lagos.
Giwa stated that it was imperative to ignite civic consciousness and cultivate intellectual discourse among the youth on the intricacies of traffic regulation and safety.

Said he: “Students participated from both the public and private secondary schools. They submitted incisive essays, articulating forward-thinking and sustainable strategies for enhancing traffic safety and efficiency in a complex urban ecosystem like Lagos.
“After a rigorous competition, the shortlisted finalists demonstrated exceptional analytical depth, rhetorical finesse, and creative ingenuity, reflecting a sophisticated understanding of urban mobility dynamics.
“Then, the panel of adjudicators, comprising scholars, policy analysts, and transport-sector professionals, undertook a rigorous evaluation process to identify the top three laureates, each of whom offered compelling paradigms for reimagining traffic management in the megacity.”
Managing Director, Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, who gave in-depth perspectives on the trajectory of LASTMA since its inception in 2000, said the agency has remained the best thing that had happened to Nigeria.
Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Oluwa Musa, in his remarks, commended the efforts of the participants. He explained that the essay competition offered several insightful and thought-provoking arguments articulated by the students during their presentations.
Also speaking, General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the competition as a cornerstone of LASTMA’s strategic advocacy framework, which, according to him, is anchored on education, public enlightenment, and participatory governance. He stated that winners of the competition would be honoured and conferred with awards of excellence by Governor Sanwo-Olu during the Second Lagos Traffic Conference, slated for Tuesday, July 15 in Lagos.
