A local boat reported to be carrying no fewer than 90 people has capsized in Gausawa community, Borgu Local Government, Niger State killing 29 people.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NISEMA) which confirmed the incident in a statement in Minna yesterday evening ,said the tragedy occurred at about 11:30am on Tuesday, when the overloaded wooden boat collided with tree stump and overturned its passengers.

According to the Director General of NSEMA, Mallam Ibrahim Arah in the statement,said , “the boat took off from Tugan sule community ,Shagunu ward with 90 people on board which include: women and children and was heading to Dugga in for condolence visit”.
He pointed out that preliminary findings indicated that the wooden boat was overloaded with 90 passengers on board when it capsized.
He disclosed that as at 4:pm on Wednesday, only 29 dead bodies have been recovered with the assistance of local divers in the community.
He stated further that 50 persons were rescued alive ,while 11 people are still missing even as search and rescue operation is still ongoing.
This latest incident is coming barely one month after a similar boat mishap in Shiroro LG in the state killed 13 people, leaving food stuff and animals perished in the water.
No fewer than 13 bodies have been recovered from the river after a wooden boat capsized in river Shiroro in Shiroro LG of the state on Saturday.
The boat was carrying 39 passengers before it capsized shortly after taken of from Guni in Munya LG and was heading to the Saturday market in Zumba, in Shiroro.
