A/ Ibom church murder: Police mull suicide, recover local pistol at crime scene

Akwa Ibom Police Command have said that the murder of one Mr Udeme Uko could be a suicide case as gun was discovered at the scene of the crime inside the church at Ikot Okusung in Ukanafun local government area of the state. 

A statement signed by the Police  Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Akwa Ibom  DSP Timfon John and made available to Journalists in Uyo on Wednesday stated  that initial investigation reveal  either a suicide  or an attack on the victim by enemies .

John said the victim was sleeping in the church with his wife and children at the time of the incident.

The statement reads reads in parts
“According to a preliminary report, the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at approximately 12:10 a.m.

“The victim, his wife, and children were sleeping at a Church in Ikot Oku Usung village when a gun shot was heard in  the church and later  Mr. Uko was discovered to have been shot on his head suggesting either a suicide or an attack from enemies, investigation will soon reveal ”

Although there was no reason given for the victim to leave his house and slept in the church with his wife and children, the police spokesperson confirmed  that the victim was found dead with gun shot on his head lying in the pool of blood inside the church.

“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the suspected murder of a 45-year-old man, Mr. Udeme Sunday Uko, who was found in pool of blood while sleeping with his family inside a church in Ukanafun Local Government Area.

“According to a preliminary report, the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at approximately 12:10 a.m. The victim, his wife, and children were sleeping at a Church in Ikot Oku Usung village when a gun shot was heard in  the church and later  Mr. Uko was discovered to have been shot on his head suggesting either a suicide or an attack from enemies, investigation will soon reveal”

“The Command was alerted to the incident by concerned citizens who received the report from the victim’s wife”.

John said the police responded to a distress call and swung to action and dispatched to the scene of crime .

“Upon receiving the information, a team of police officers was immediately dispatched to the scene of the crime. During the visit, a locally made pistol was recovered as an exhibit.

“The corpse of the deceased has since been deposited at the  Mortuary for preservation and autopsy”.

John disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in the state CP Baba Azare has directed  a thorough and swift investigation to be conducted to apprehend those responsible for the crime.

“Investigation is ongoing, and further developments will be communicated to the public as they arise.” She said
