Falcons Retain Africa’s Top Spot, 36th in Global Rankings

The Super Falcons have maintained their status as Africa’s top women’s football team and remain 36th in the global FIFA rankings, according to the latest update released on Thursday. Despite a period of inactivity between December and now, the nine-time African champions’ position on both the continental and global stages remained unaffected, while some of their African rivals dropped a few places.

Reigning WAFCON champions South Africa, positioned second in Africa behind Nigeria, fell four spots globally to 54th. Morocco holds the third spot on the continent, sitting 60th worldwide, and Zambia, now fourth-best in Africa, dropped two places to 64th globally.

These rankings come a few months before the 2024 WAFCON tournament, scheduled to be played in Morocco from July 25 to 26. The Super Falcons will be aiming to secure their 10th continental title after finishing fourth in the last edition in 2022, while teams like South Africa, Morocco, and Zambia will be eager to deny Nigeria another championship.

Globally, the United States lead the FIFA women’s rankings, with Spain in second place. Germany and England occupy the third and fourth spots respectively, and Japan climbed to fifth, pushing Sweden down to sixth. Elsewhere in Africa, Kenya made one of the biggest gains by jumping seven places to 142nd, whereas Tunisia experienced a steep decline, dropping 11 spots to 89th after losing 43.79 points. Djibouti achieved its highest-ever ranking, reaching 195th position.

The next FIFA Women’s World Ranking is scheduled to be released on June 12, with the Super Falcons aiming to improve their position ahead of the highly anticipated WAFCON tournament.
