ADC defies INEC, vows to contest 2027 elections

By Lawrence Agbo

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has insisted it will participate in the 2027 general elections despite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withdrawing recognition of its current leadership following a court order.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the ADC remains confident it will overcome the legal and administrative hurdles before the 2027 elections.

“One thing I can guarantee is that we will contest the 2027 election on the ADC platform,” he said.

Also, Abdullahi express optimism that the judiciary will resolve the dispute in the party’s favour.

“Regardless of what has happened in Nigeria, we still have confidence in the judiciary. We believe we have a slam-dunk case. If we are granted the accelerated hearing today and the court sits, we are confident that justice will be done. We have no doubt in our minds about that. While we are hoping for the best, we are also preparing for the worst.”

Abdullahi maintained that the party followed due process by notifying INEC ahead of its congresses and dismissed concerns that the commission’s stance could derail its plans.

“If the same INEC that acknowledged our leadership change is now reversing itself, they are not going to stop us,” he added.

The ADC spokesman also rejected calls for an election boycott, describing such a move as a surrender that would undermine democratic participation.

He further accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu of attempting to weaken opposition parties in a bid to dominate the 2027 elections.

According to him, the ADC is determined to resist any move toward a one-party system and will do so within the confines of the law, while positioning itself as a viable alternative ahead of the next general election.

“We in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are saying that Nigeria will not become a one-party state in our generation. We will do everything within the law to resist it,” he said.
