Agripreneur Oladeji Olatunji on food security mission

By Funsho Arogundade

At the heart of Nigeria’s food crisis, Dr Oladeji Olatunji, is leading his company, Firefly Agro, as a model of innovation and resilience. With rising food inflation, shrinking purchasing power, and youth migration threatening food systems, Olatunji is charting a bold path to ensure Nigerian households have access to affordable, hygienic, and high-quality cassava products.

Shaped by his father’s influence, Olatunji developed a problem-solving mindset early in life. Rather than complaining, he became driven to find practical ways to make food cheaper and more accessible.

When about to launch Firefly Agro, he knew finding funding would be a bit tough. He didn’t let that barrier deter him. Rather, he pushed harder, knowing the result would bring relief to families and strengthen food security. He deliberately rejected the traditional route of government funding. Instead, he turned to friends and family, fostering a spirit of collective ownership that not only raised capital but also anchored the company’s mission of creating value for ordinary Nigerians. Today, Firefly Agro stands as proof that agriculture, driven by vision and community support, can be a force for good.

Under his leadership, Firefly Agro has grown from cultivation to processing, delivering garri, lafun, Semo, coconut garri, and milky coconut garri. By turning obstacles into opportunities, Olatunji is not only feeding homes but also reshaping agriculture as a sustainable path to national development.
