The Independent Broadcast Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to apologise over a remark he made about Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye.
Speaking in a statement, IBAN Chairman, Ahmed Ramalan, and Acting General Secretary, Fidelis Duker, requested that Wike retract the comment he made about shooting Okinbaloye.
During a routine media chat, Wike, who disclosed that he was angered by Okinbaloye’s opinion on the direction of Nigeria’s democracy while watching Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, stated, “If there was any way to break the screen, I would have shot him.”
Addressing Wike’s comment, the body threatened to boycott all media engagements organised by the minister if he refused to tender an apology.
“Should the minister fail to meet these requests within a reasonable period, IBAN will have no choice but to advise all independent broadcast stations to suspend coverage of all press briefings, media chats, and official news conferences hosted by the FCT minister.
“We hope the minister will take the necessary corrective action so that normal coverage can continue without interruption,” IBAN said.
