Atiku condemns Nnamdi Kanu’s prolonged detention

By John Ogunsemore

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has decried the continued detention of Leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu in spite of court orders granting him bail.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Atiku said Kanu’s prolonged incarceration remained an open sore on the nation’s conscience.

Kanu is being tried on terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He has  remained in detention since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021, pending the outcome of his trial.

Many prominent personalities from the South-East geopolitical zone have called for a political solution to Kanu’s case, saying his release would restore peace to the zone.

On Wednesday, former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore initiated a fresh push for the IPOB leader’s freedom.

He called on Atiku, Mr. Peter Obi, Governor Charles Soludo of Anambia, Governor Alex Otti of Abia, and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to join the campaign.

Reacting, Atiku expressed full support for efforts to secure Kanu’s release, calling on the authorities to respect court orders granting the embattled IPOB leader bail.

He said, “The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains an open sore on our nation’s conscience and a stain on our belief in the rule of law.

“Defying court orders that granted him bail is an abuse of power and an assault on justice.

“I, therefore, lend my voice in full support of the campaign led by Omoyele Sowore for his immediate release or due prosecution.

“We fail as patriots if we allow Kanu’s case to fester as yet another wound this nation refuses to heal.”
