Buhari: Nigeria has lost one of its greatest leaders – Shettima

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed profound sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the nation’s loss as one of the greatest in recent memory.

In a heartfelt condolence message released on Sunday, July 13, by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President said, “It is a black Sunday in Nigeria! My heart is overwhelmed by grief, as the nation mourns one of its greatest leaders of all time, His Excellency, former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.” Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, at a clinic in the United Kingdom at the age of 82.

Shettima, who recently visited the former President in London at the request of President Bola Tinubu, lamented that Buhari’s death came unexpectedly after hopes for his recovery. “This loss is too cruel than terms could express—coming at a time I was anticipating his quick recovery after visiting him at the hospital,” he said.

Highlighting Buhari’s enduring legacy, the Vice President noted, “Great leaders like the late Buhari are very rare to come by in a lifetime. His legacies as an archetypal public servant, having served in several positions in the military before ascending to the highest office in the land as Head of State and later as civilian President, will continue to serve as a leading light for future leaders to follow.”

He praised Buhari’s dedication to Nigeria, saying, “The late Pa Buhari dedicated his active years to serving Nigeria and its people. He was a true democrat in all senses of the word, and his loyalty to his country, uncompromising stance on unity, and vision for a greater Nigeria contributed in no small measure to keeping the nation as one.”

Shettima concluded by extending condolences to Buhari’s family, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians. “May we find solace in the fact that the former Nigerian leader will continue to live amongst us through his legacies already engraved in the very fabric of the Nigerian state.”
