A fire outbreak occurred at an MTN booster station located within the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, in the early hours of Saturday. The incident, which happened around 4 a.m., was reportedly caused by an electrical surge.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the fire, which broke out at the booster station situated within the Faculty of Nursing, severely damaged the Mikano electrical generator, control board, and other telecommunications equipment.
Confirming the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform to Governor Seyi Makinde and Chairman of the State Fire Services Agency, Moroof Akinwande, stated that the state fire service responded promptly to contain the fire.
“The fire incident was reported at exactly 04:00 hrs on Saturday, February 22, 2025. Fire personnel, led by ACFS Olubunmi, were deployed immediately and arrived on time. Upon arrival, we found the Mikano electrical generator and control board engulfed in flames. We worked together with the university’s fire marshals, and the fire was completely extinguished. The cause of the fire was traced to an electrical surge,” Akinwande explained.
There were no reports of casualties, and authorities have assured that investigations will continue to assess the extent of the damage and prevent future occurrences.
