Flood wrecks havoc in Zaria, displaces 270 households, properties

No fewer than 270 households were displaced in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State following a devastating flood that submerged several communities.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of September 11 around 6:00 am, affected areas including Gangaren Mobil, Bayan Cinema (Tudun Wada Ward), as well as Magume, Bako Zuntu, and Kamacha (Tukur Tukur Ward).

An assessment conducted by the Nigerian Red Cross Society (Zaria Division) revealed that at least 115 houses were impacted by the flood.

The disaster also affected 476 children, while valuables such as food items, clothing, electronics, and other household materials were destroyed.

Although no lives were lost, many families have been left homeless and stranded, requiring urgent humanitarian assistance.

The assessment team, led by Engr. Jamil Ahmad Mohammad Jaga, comprised officials from the Nigerian Red Cross, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Department of Environmental Services, and the Welfare Department.

Disaster Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Zaria Division, Abdulmumin Adamu, however, called for swift intervention to support the affected communities.
