The respectable women who represented Nigeria at the gathering of delegations from 189 countries for the UN Fourth World Conference on Women, also known as the Beijing Conference, held from August 30 to September 15, 1995, at the China National Convention Centre in Beijing, China, would today be appalled by what some of their gender, who are much younger, are doing nowadays. In fact, the women would be so embarrassed to read about the sexcapades of these younger females.
The primary objective of the Beijing conference was to push for gender equality in all ramifications, to advance society in political and socio-economic terms.
Sadly, female Millennials, also known as Generation Y, have given a whole new meaning to the popular saying, “what a man can do, a woman can also do, even better.” For starters, that saying was coined with a positive connotation in mind.

Yes, we have known for centuries that randy men, like lions chasing preys, boldly go out to look for ladies that will intimately rock and roll with them. Such men are very intentional about it. Some even brag about their successes while having drinks with their close buddies.
Zoom to the present time, and you will discover that ladies now hunt for men who will sleep with them. Yes, you read that correctly. These ladies want able men with the stamina and sexual finesse to take them to Cloud-9, that point of orgasmic satiation that would leave them tumbling down the mountain side with joy and all the nerve ends in their body tingling.
Whereas the run-of-the-mill hook-up chicks hang around event centres or relaxation spots that men go to unwind, the new breed of ladies seeking sexual satisfaction prefer to target fitness centres where virile men with six packs frequent or work in as fitness trainers.
What the interested ladies do is simple: they go through the normal process of registering as members of the centres, to participate in the fitness training programme, ostensibly to slim down and maintain good health.
But their real intention is to strike up a relationship with a suitable male trainer, who would also be ready and available to romp with them.
Initially, when the story began to circulate through the grapevine that most fitness centres within and outside Lagos were gradually becoming hubs for sex-hookups for men and women, I took the tales with a pinch of salt, especially as tony and upscale areas like Lekki and Ikeja got mentioned, along with the fast developing Amuwo Odofin. Satellite Town, Bariga, Ikotun and some other places in Lagos were often cited. With a discreet investigation, one would discover that the same bug has bitten most fitness centres.
As the gossip mill continued to churn out tales about the things happening at the fitness centres, I visited a few gyms to nose around.
To visit a particular gym in Lekki which was recommended by a friend who lives in the area, I dressed in close-up fitted pants, knee-length T-shirt and sneakers. Also, I wore a headset and a smart watch. A look in the mirror assured me that I was appropriately packaged in a modest gym outfit.
At the entrance of the gym, the style and ambience alone would effectively convince you that it is a fitness centre. Luxury oozes from every piece of furniture in the place. Evidently not a cheap place to be. It has just about every piece of equipment that proving that it is the right place to keep fit and lose weight under the guidance of gym instructors and dieticians. Importantly too, it is the right place to network with the desirable class of people. In the place, there were many fresh-looking girls adorned in tight-fitted and revealing sportswear. They appeared to be content creators and influencers. On their shoulders hung the packs of their ring lights. Armed with their expensive iPhones, they recorded clean videos and took sharp pictures which they would upload on their social media pages. It is not a gym for the chicken-hearted. It is meant for a particular class of men and women.
Unfazed, I walked up to the manager to make inquiries. I was taken on a tour of the facility, to see it in operation. There are morning sessions for workers, midday and evening sessions for people who control their times. It is a very active environment with a massive table tennis court. More importantly, there is a beautiful kitchenette, from where finger-licking goodies were being served. In the facility, you can relax in the sit-out area for a cup of ginger tea, cappuccino or mochaccino and protein bites.
Still curious, I took a walk around, to feel the ambience of the gym, and watched men and women on various sophisticated sports equipment, and all the while I was sniffing for news.
As I ambled along, I noticed a man who was very busy on his iPhone. He seemed to have just come into the country from abroad and came to the gym to catch up on events of the day. He sat comfortably, occasionally looking around him as he read intently on his phone. I greeted him, and he responded, introducing himself: “I am Eric, popularly known as Ricky. I came in four days ago. My place is close to this gym. In the few days I have been in the country, this place has kept me fulfilled, I have made friends with both men and women.
Just immediately, a young girl who was near-nude appeared from the blues and both snatched a hot kiss, then grasped each other’s hands. Ricky introduced her: “This is Ella, my girlfriend. We met here and it has been wonderful knowing her.” She was all over him, before they walked away.
Then I went over where instructors were with some ladies for a dance session. The instructors are mostly men. The intimate way the instructors held the ladies was quite suggestive. If not for the very thin layer of material they wore which covered their private areas, you would think they were engaged in some kind of erotic activity, in the name of massage. An instructor would ask a lady to throw her legs wide open, while he massaged her – stylishly touching her private areas – and the lady laid back, enjoying being massaged.
After the session, I coyly said to the lady: “How do you feel? Hope the bones are stretched? She said, “Very well, I feel so good.” The instructor quietly added: “We make ladies happy with our work.”
Whatever that statement means, it will not be outside sex which is the ultimate. For these women, sexual satisfaction must not necessarily come from a husband.
At another fitness centre in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, I found the facility very well equipped. But the private, and perhaps interesting need of the ladies who throng the place has expanded the purpose and scope of the place. One understands that pressure of personal activities and users seem to change the purpose of the gym. It has become a very cherished meeting point for upscale relationships between men and women. Here, men wear sportswear that reveal the exciting sight of their six packs and the very visible outlines of the well-endowed ‘tools of their trade’ nestled between their legs. It is said that this particular gym is frequented by married ladies whose husbands are far away in foreign countries. They are stylishly looking for men to take care of their needs while the husbands are away. So, what most of them do is that instead of wallowing in loneliness, they flock to the gym to have fun and frolic with men. Do not forget that the gym is an adult environment, and not for the children. So, whatever happens there is the person’s responsibility.
In another session, a fitness instructor was taking three full ladies on a beginner’s class of step up and down while the legs danced to the rhythm of the music. As the ladies in their revealing outfits were jumping as much as they could, their attractive heavy boobs were also dancing along while four men stood directly opposite them to watch the free show. The reporter asked, “Must a person come with a particular outfit? “No, whatever that makes one comfortable, but apparently not a pair of jeans,” one of the ladies responded. These were full-chested women who entertained the men who also enjoyed what they saw.
One wonders whether all feminine sportswear must all be revealing, provocative and attractive. One of the gym enthusiasts offered this explanation: “It is one’s choice to wear whatever he or she wants to wear to the gym. One can choose to wear decent gym outfits while another chooses to expose whatever he or she has.”
Again, some of the old known gyms are gradually becoming local drinking joints – like the one at the Ikotun area in Alimosho LGA. Old, abandoned sports equipment can be seen in the place. Old men with much younger girls are mostly seen around there. After taking their drink, as closely monitored by the reporter, they would disappear into the rooms converted for ‘the other room activities.’ This is the reason an anonymous fellow described the former booming gym place as a sex-hub.
At a mini-stadium within Alimosho, a divorced man and woman have made the mini-stadium the meeting point. The man would arrive first and within a short time, the woman would show up. Both would drive away to their destination.
One thing no one can take away from fitness centers is the fact that one cannot stop the movement or relationship between men and women around the gym. Especially when payment has been made. Instructors or managers cannot stop anyone from gaining access into the gym.
Be it as it may, it is not only sexual relationships that manifest at gyms. Some healthy relationships have also originated from such places and led to healthy marriages. Felix met his wife Laura at a gym. Both came the same day to enroll at the centre. As they inquiried from the manager, they discovered that they knew some common friends. Within time, they hit it up in a relationship which led to marriage. They have been married for the last four year and blessed with two children.
Dear Nigerians, a gym is basically a business set up for fitness training. No one would close his or her business because it is promoting unhealthy relationships. It is not the gym, but the individual’s choice. As far as men and women gather at a place including worship centres, admiration would always develop. Somewhere must be a meeting point. Gyms are not hotels and brothels and cannot be shut down because of the irresponsibility of some of the users. Except, there are other crimes that exist within its ambience. A cheating husband or wife will cheat anywhere they find the opportunity, be it in the office, school, business areas etc.
Therefore, the onus lies on the individual that wants to go to the gym. It is either the person is actually going to use the gym positively or execute his or her hidden agenda.
