The Movement for the Survival of Ijaw Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND) has blasted the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) over its ongoing strike due to the face-off with the management of Dangote Refinery.
The national secretary of MOSIEND, Winston Amain, in a statement, urged Nigerians to resist PENGASSAN on its mission to sabotage the economy.
Amain, who described the current industrial action as self-centred, said ordinary Nigerians have not benefited economically from the union’s industrial action.
The national scribe of MOSIEND accused PENGASSAN of being silent over the inefficiency of the government-owned refineries.
He stated that instead of fighting Dangote, PENGASSAN should focus on fighting to make the government-owned refineries work.
“They are busy flexing their power, yet Nigerians are still buying fuel at N1,150 in the cities, while our brothers and sisters in rural areas pay between N2,500 and N3,000. Where were these unions when all our refineries collapsed?
“What concrete steps have they taken to ensure that the trillions of Naira spent in the name of reviving our refineries, monies that ended up in the private accounts of a few, are returned to truly make our refineries functional?
“Nigerians have been asleep for too long. It is time for us to wake up and stop PENGASSAN, TUC, DAPPMAN and others from worsening the hardship faced daily by the ordinary Nigerian.
“We must not allow organised interests to hold the nation hostage while the masses continue to suffer. Instead of fighting Dangote, they should put all their strength together to make Nigeria’s refineries work. What we want to see are functioning refineries, not misplaced agitation, diversions, and battles that deepen the suffering of the common man,’’ he said.
