Imperative of effective communication in governance

By Tochukwu Wilfred Obiotika

Communication has two levels especially for those in leadership positions. The first is beyond the level of subordinates and the second is communicating with understanding and empathy. Maintaining an effective communication channel with the masses is not for convenience lest many misinterpretations will arise. For those who can see, think or imagine, our country is getting darker everyday and the leaders are not sincere.

Sincerity means that the appearance and the reality are exactly the same. As a realist, you could as well predict that the foreboding are in the clouds. There’s a cloud of despair, sadness, bereavement and suffering all over the country. So many families have become dependants despite their daily struggles and sweat. The clouds are not accidents; they are predictable and would soon cover the nation’s airspace.

With the introduction of democracy in philosophy and history books, humanity in their chicanery took in the idea that power remained with the masses instead of leaders. Such tricky things became more elaborate with the West and their aids to African nationals, countries. Tacitly, both in the donkey ages, now and the time to come, the government and whomever is in power possesses the land and the people in it. Most leaders of the world have been known to be selfish, merciless and violent. Rulers in history like Joseph Stalin, Adolph Hitler, Mao Tse-Tung, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, Harold Shipman, Luis Garavito, and others in their generation were cognized to be cruel, oppressive towards the poor, needy, helpless and weak.

The story is not different from the insatiable cupidity amongst African leaders. Disillusionment is about to hit the political heavyweights in the country whereby they would be stripped of their flattering ideas. The terrible people in the present administration are all still clamped in the illusion that others may suffer but they cannot. Nigerians have given their total trust to whoever is in power; never bitter even though the nation fumbles and tumbles. It got nothing to do with distressed outlook, everything is gloomy; depicting that something unsuitable would take place. We might fail to expound it in plain terms; yet there’s a vague, dreaded sense of an impending vicious occurrence.

When it’s so hot and dry, trees lose their leaves, even in early harmattan as a way of conserving their energy. Significantly, they do not shed their seeds at the same time. They keep them so that they can propagate. Nigeria has shed both leaves and seeds. And she’s driving towards getting emited. Stilted conversations which sometimes inspire hope and confidence are nowadays making folks depressed, anxious, lonely and addicted. Even if one is unoffendable, one would fret because an ordinary statement can make a big impact. Dreams of success are crushed continually by policies and taxes not beneficial to the country herself. The country deteriorates like a fruit rotting from within. There is no vision even to that of pouring sand on dilapidated roads.

Every nation has its own revivalists. There’s a time of visitation for every race and people. Each country produces her own visioners and transformers. In the same vein, a nation is also known by her felonists and arsonists, even notorious criminals. The cost of living crisis would likely persist, neither would inflation be checked. The economy might not be growing neither would there be employment for teeming youths. We do not expect to have transparency and accountability in governance. There may never be foreign direct investment, food security or prosperity for the citizenry. Energy and electricity inadequacy would endure. Critical infrastructure, health and education system might continually choke just as insurgency, massacre, farmer-herder conflicts, kidnapping and banditry would be on the rise. Expectedly, European support and American aids would not suffice.

Convincingly, Nigerians are being shaped to fit a little opening up there near the spire. The destiny of the citizens wobble because the tyre meant to carry the weight and power for its actualization is silently leaking air. We might have tears and sorrows but they are seeds for the justice and judgement coming close. Most times, it’s never wise to beard the lion in its den, especially where the government and her people are concerned. In order not to bark at the wrong tree, it’s of essence to testify that Nigeria is a state that has gone to rack and ruin not for lack of resources but due to incompetence.
