The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the latest wave of violent attacks in Plateau, Kaduna, and Taraba states, describing them as further evidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government has failed to secure the country.
In a statement issued by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary (North Central), Hon. Abdulmumini Abdulsalam, the party said the recurring killings underscore what it described as the government’s inability to address Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.
Gunmen had reportedly stormed the Gari Ya Waye community in the Angwan Rukuba district of Plateau State, a neighbourhood close to the University of Jos, where they allegedly opened fire indiscriminately, killing about 30 residents and injuring several others.
The NDC also cited other incidents, including the killing of 13 people in Kahir, Kaduna State, during a wedding ceremony attack, as well as separate attacks in Takum, Taraba State, where a policeman, a fuel station attendant, and two internally displaced persons (IDPs) were killed while attempting to access food.
Reacting to the incidents, the party condemned the killings in their entirety and sympathised with the victims and affected families, particularly residents of Plateau State, who it said have continued to endure repeated assaults.
“We mourn with you, and we feel your pain. Your loss is our loss, and your grief is our grief,” he said.
He accused the APC-led federal government of repeatedly failing to deliver on its core responsibility of protecting lives and property.
According to him, it is becoming increasingly clear that the APC has no workable solution to the insecurity ravaging Plateau, the Middle Belt, and other parts of the country.
“The APC government has again failed the people of these states and Nigeria on security, which is one of the promises it made to the country,” the statement said.
“It is not enough for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to speak from a now-too-familiar template that is increasingly sounding like a broken record, rehashing the same marching order to service chiefs and security agencies, and return to inertia immediately after.
“The lethargy with which the federal government treats these killings has even become dismissive, with the governors of the affected states all being members of the APC.
“Even the little efforts that the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, was making have virtually petered out. He, too, now pays lip service to arresting the perpetrators.
“We call on the APC government to go beyond rhetoric and optics and do something concrete to stop the killings and arrest this mindless slaughter of innocent Nigerians and stop playing politics with the lives of Nigerians,” the party added.
