Former governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died at the age of 91.
He described the late monarch as a symbol of integrity, wisdom and purposeful leadership, whose reign brought remarkable development and peace to Ijebuland and beyond.
“The passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona, is a monumental loss not only to the Ijebu people and Ogun State but also to the entire nation.
“His reign, spanning over six decades, was marked by courage, fairness and dedication to the preservation of Yoruba culture and values,” Kalu stated.
The former Senate Chief Whip commiserated with the government and people of Ogun State, the royal family of the Adetona dynasty and the entire Ijebu traditional council.
“As one of Nigeria’s most revered monarchs, the Awujale lived an exemplary life. He was not only a first-class king but a first-rate statesman, who used his throne to foster unity and good governance. His legacy will continue to inspire generations.”
Senator Kalu also extended his condolences to President Bola Tinubu, noting that the nation has lost a stabilising figure in traditional leadership.
The late Awujale, who ascended the throne in 1960, was widely admired for his promotion of education, cultural heritage and civic responsibility.
Under his watch, the annual Ojude Oba Festival grew to become one of the most celebrated cultural events in Africa.
