Kano clears N27b gratuities, death benefits

From Desmond Mgboh, Kano

Kano State Government has paid the sum of N27 billion out of the N48 billion outstanding gratuities and death benefits owed workers in the state. The sum of N48 billion unpaid gratuities and death benefits was inherited from the previous administration in the state.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony of the payment at the Government House, Kano, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said his administration had earmarked a total of N5 billion for payment of the fifth tranche of the retirees’ gratuity and death benefits.

“With the payment of the fifth tranche of the retirees’ gratuity and death benefits, we have within the two years in office offset N27 billion out of the N48 billion inherited from the previous administration,” he said. He said the payment was part of his administration’s resolve to bring succour to retirees and their families after suffering from prolonged delay in getting their entitlements after retirement. He pledged to continue to give priority to the welfare of the civil servants, especially pensioners who had spent a substantial part of their lives serving the state.

The governor urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of what they collected and invest wisely in lawful businesses for more income to cater for their day-to-day needs and other necessities of life.

Speaking on the occasion, the former National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, applauded the administration for its resolve to better the lives of pensioners in the state.

He urged them to reciprocate by ensuring his victory in the forthcoming governorship election in 2027.
