Kebbi gov suspends all political activities over Lakurawa attacks

From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi

Following the persistent armed banditry attacks on some parts of the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled Kebbi State government has suspended all politically related activities in the state.

The state governor and leader of the party, Dr Nasir Idris, gave the directive during an expanded APC stakeholders’ forum meeting earlier, which was scheduled to be held in Birnin Kebbi over the weekend.

Already seated at the venue for the meeting were members of the National and State Assemblies, Ministers, national officers of the party, Commissioners, Chairmen and members of the state’s Boards and Commissions, elders, Special Advisers, and the leadership of the party from the ward, local government, and state levels.

Idris, disturbed by the incident, stormed the banquet hall of the presidential lodge, avoided the normal protocols, and announced the cancellation of the meeting and all political gatherings until further notice.

He told the party leaders that the cancellation was necessitated by the deadly armed banditry attacks in Bunza Local Government on Friday and recent ones in other parts of the state.

“As a responsible government committed to ensuring peace and protection of lives and properties, it must devote adequate time and resources to confront the unfortunate security challenges,” he stated.

He disclosed that just last week, with the backing of the Defence Headquarters, adequate support from the state government, and the community, combined teams of the army and air force succeeded in not only killing a large number of bandits but also repelling several attempted attacks in Kebbi South.

Idris assured the people of the state that the tempo would be sustained until the desired results are achieved.

The governor revealed that, in view of the persistent attacks, the government has worked out a strategic plan aimed at strengthening the capacity of the troops through continuous consultation, information gathering, and sharing among the security agencies, community leaders, and heads of relevant state government agencies, including himself, to ensure effective operations across the state.
