Level of fake drugs, unwholesome products in the market alarming -NAFDAC

From Fred Ezeh, Abuja

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has described the level of fake drugs and unwholesome processed foods in the Nigerian markets as alarming.

The Agency confirmed that the country is confronted with an insidious threat that jeopardises the health of the citizens, the integrity of the healthcare system, and the trust that Nigerians place in the products they consume daily.

The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, stated this in Abuja on Friday, at the inauguration of the federal task force on counterfeit drugs and unwholesome processed foods in Nigeria.

She said the federal task force, empowered by the provisions of Cap C 34, was a testament to the collective resolve of all the stakeholders to the fight against fake drugs and unwholesome processed foods.

“It’s also a recognition that the fight against these illicit products requires a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach that is swift, decisive, and relentless.

“These efforts indicated that the fight against counterfeit products is urgent and on-going. Lives are at stake every day, and delays in action deepen the risks faced by our people. We must act now with purpose, resolve, and unity,” she said. The NAFDAC Director-General further highlighted the Agency’s recent efforts that exemplify its commitment to the fight against fake drugs. According to her: “Between February and March 2025, NAFDAC conducted coordinated operations at major drug markets, notably Onitsha and Ariaria markets, which resulted in the evacuation and destruction of over 100 trucks of counterfeit and substandard products, valued at over N1trillion.

“This massive seizure not only removed dangerous products from circulation, but also sent a strong message that Nigeria is serious about protecting its citizens.”
