Speaking during the occasion, the leader of the delegation, Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, said the visit was part of efforts to expand the maritime strategy of the navy and to support maritime security in the hinterland.
According to Nwatu, River Niger remains a source of livelihood to the citizens and a great national asset which supports agriculture and power generation in the country.
“But unfortunately, with the insurgency and conflicts in Nigeria, that same River Niger, in spite of its potentials, is being utilised by some criminal elements to escalate insecurity in the country.
The team leader expressed optimism that with the support of the governor and people of Kebbi, the move would pave the way for improved security especially in the Northwest
Governor Idris described the idea as a good and holistic development in views of the security challenges bedevilling the southern part of Kebbi State.
The governor lamented that insecurity in the neighbouring Benin Republic was also a source of challenge to the state, adding: “the country is also facing challenges of security, not to talk of Niger Republic, and Kebbi State shares a border with the two countries.”
He assured the delegation that the state government would do everything possible to create an enabling environment for the navy to operate, assuring that a temporary accommodation would be provided for the take-off of the project.
