NGE celebrates World News Day, reaffirms commitment to press freedom

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has joined the global media community in marking World News Day, celebrated annually on September 28, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to fact-based journalism, editorial integrity, and the defense of press freedom.

In a statement jointly signed by NGE President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild emphasised the vital role of journalism in upholding democratic values and empowering citizens with accurate information.

The statement acknowledged the efforts of journalists across Nigeria and around the world who work under increasingly difficult conditions to deliver the truth.

“As a body, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting high standards of editorial leadership and protecting press freedom,” the Guild stated. “We salute journalists in Nigeria and worldwide who work tirelessly to bring us the truth, even in the face of intimidation, threats, and repressive laws.”

The NGE raised concerns over growing attempts to suppress press freedom in Nigeria, particularly through the misuse of legislation such as the Cybercrime (Prohibition and Prevention) Act, which it says has often been weaponized against journalists.

“We urge the government at all levels and individuals to stop using repressive laws to harass and intimidate journalists,” the Guild said, calling on authorities to uphold the Freedom of Information Act by providing timely access to public information and aligning with the United Nations’ principles on access to information.

While celebrating the power and importance of fact-based journalism, the NGE also called on media professionals to remain committed to the highest ethical standards.

“We urge journalists to shun fake news, misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda, and instead uphold the canons of journalism — accuracy, fairness, objectivity, and factual reporting.”

The Guild used the occasion to remind Nigerians of the essential role of journalism in a healthy democracy, stating that the public must “choose truth, facts, and journalism,” especially in an era marked by information overload and digital manipulation.

“Fact-based journalism provides citizens with accurate and reliable information, enabling them to make informed decisions,” the Guild noted. “Any attempt to gag the media not only threatens journalism but puts democracy and freedom of expression in jeopardy.”
