No going back on 24-hour light in Bayelsa – Diri

From Femi Folaranmi, Yenagoa

The Technical Adviser on Media and Public Affairs to Bayelsa State Governor, Mr Wisdom Ikuli, has again reaffirmed the commitment of the Bayelsa State government to 24-hour uninterrupted power supply to Bayelsans before the end of the year

Ikuli, speaking in an interview after a guided tour of the facility at Elebele, noted that the progress of the project is a testament to Diri’s vision for development in Bayelsa State.

While expressing joy that the project was 85 per cent complete, with installation of the turbines to commence in a few days, he pointed out that the multiplier effect of a steady power supply couldn’t be overstated.

According to him, Diri’s plan to have 24-hour light and the manufacturing of meters and other power accessories in the state would accelerate economic development in the state.

“You can see that the power the governor, Senator Douye Diri, promised is fast becoming a reality. He has promised that by the end of December, there will be light from the turbine, not only light but a 24-hour, uninterrupted power supply in Bayelsa.

“It is going to have a multiplier effect. A multitude of people will come into Bayelsa State because of steady light. Beyond that, businesses will boom.  People will relocate from neighbouring states to Bayelsa. The hospitality business will boom, and there will be an improvement in social life. We must continue to thank the governor, whom God is using to bring development to Bayelsa.

In the next few months, Bayelsa will see that steady power is a reality and not audio development. Power is a general problem in Nigeria, but very soon, ours will be solved,’’ he said.

On the argument by some residents that the electricity should be free, Ikuli explained that it is unfair to think Bayelsa would give people free light.

He downplayed the amount Bayelsans would pay, stressing that it is insignificant compared to what is being used for alternative power sources in the state.
