Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu and the Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Sulaimon Abou-Nolla, have called on Nigerians to embrace discipline, tolerance and unity as critical pillars for national development.
Speaking during a post-Eid al-Fitr’s prayer at the palace, Sheikh Abou-Nolla said the gathering was part of a long-standing tradition that reflects the cordial relationship between the mosque and the palace.
He explained that the visit, which comes after the Ramadan fast, was not only to seek royal blessings but also to offer prayers for peace, stability and prosperity in Lagos and Nigeria at large.
According to the Chief Imam, the essence of the prayers is rooted in promoting peaceful coexistence among citizens, regardless of religion, ethnicity or social background.
He lamented the growing intolerance across the world, noting that lack of mutual understanding and respect has contributed to global unrest.
“We need to be tolerant and be our brother’s keeper. That is the whole essence of this prayer – to foster unity and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
Abou-Nolla also stressed the importance of patriotism, urging Nigerians to show greater commitment to the country while offering prayers for leaders, including the President and state governors, for divine guidance in governance.
Reflecting on the just-concluded Ramadan, the cleric emphasised that the lessons of the holy month must extend beyond the period of fasting.
He likened Ramadan to a period of training, urging Muslims to internalise its teachings, particularly discipline, sacrifice and fear of God.
“During Ramadan, we witnessed peace and order. That discipline must continue beyond the fasting period. It is essential for national development,” he said.
He further noted that the spirit of unity experienced during Ramadan, including harmonious relations between Muslims and Christians, should be sustained to strengthen national cohesion.
Similarly, in his interview, Oba of Lagos also corroborated the Chief Imam, stressed that discipline and selflessness remain indispensable for achieving lasting peace and sustainable development in Nigeria.
