The Osun State government’s recent allocation of N678 million for the reconstruction of the Sango-Timi Shrine and Grove in Ede, the hometown of Governor Ademola Adeleke, has drawn significant criticism from various quarters.
Public analyst Adebayo Adedeji expressed concerns over the budget allocation, noting that the amount earmarked for the shrine project is nearly double the N376 million released for education subsidies in the first half of the year, as reported in the state’s Budget Implementation Report for Q2 2025.
He highlighted ongoing unfulfilled promises to state workers, revealing that only N500 million—equivalent to 11.1% of the N4.5 billion budgeted for gratuity arrears—has been disbursed so far this year, adding that the Contributory Pension Scheme remains underfunded, with only N998 million, or 14.3% of the planned N7 billion, allocated.

Adedeji criticised the apparent focus on development in Ede, stating, “In 2025 alone, seven road projects valued at over N70 billion have been awarded for dualisation in Ede, while many infrastructure projects in towns like Ife, Osogbo, and Ilesa remain unfinished nearly two years after being awarded.”
He questioned the rationale behind prioritising the shrine reconstruction, asking, “If the project aims to promote tourism and preserve cultural heritage, why focus solely on Ede? What about historically significant sites like Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba people, or Osogbo, home to the UNESCO-listed Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove?”
The Osogbo Development Action Group (ODAG) also condemned the funding allocation, labelling it a “reckless expenditure” that contributes little long-term value to the economy.
In a statement, coordinator Omosola Olabode, emphasised the need for investment in the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, arguing that it is not only an emblem of cultural pride but also a vital tourism hub that could create jobs and stimulate local economic growth.
“Governor Ademola Adeleke promised to upgrade the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove during his campaign. This site deserves proper attention and investment to enhance our cultural heritage and attract tourism revenue,” Olabode said.
