PenCom seeks 75% police pension, 20% FG contribution

From Adanna Nnamani, Abuja

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) is pushing sweeping reforms to boost police welfare under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), including raising monthly pensions to 75 per cent of an officer’s final salary before retirement.

According to a statement issued by PenCom on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, its Director-General, Ms Omolola Oloworaran, made this known during a visit to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

She also urged the Federal Government to raise its pension contribution for police officers from 10 per cent to 20 per cent, alongside other measures such as a health insurance scheme for retirees, expansion of the Retirement Resettlement Fund, and a complete overhaul of the police pension structure.

Oloworaran dismissed calls for the police to exit the CPS as unnecessary and counterproductive, stressing that all issues can be resolved within the scheme.

PenCom also said it is working with the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation to roll out a new gratuity scheme in 2026, giving treasury-funded federal workers one year’s total emoluments at retirement.

“This follows an earlier high-level meeting between Ms Oloworaran and the Head of Service, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, as part of efforts to ensure federal employees have a secure financial cushion at retirement,” the statement read.

Responding, IGP Egbetokun praised PenCom’s efforts and reaffirmed the Police Force’s readiness to work with PenCom to resolve police pension concerns.

He acknowledged the challenges police officers have raised and expressed his commitment to engaging constructively to maintain confidence.
