Peseiro blasts Eagles’ AFCON 2026 third-place finish

Former coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Jose Peseiro says his team that finished second at the AFCON two years ago did better than the one that finished third at the tournament in January, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Peseiro led the team to their first AFCON final since 2013, a game they lost 1-2 to the host Cote d’Ivoire. It was their best finish in 11 years.

At the recently concluded AFCON under new coach Eric Chelle, the team finished third but were roundly praised for how they performed in the tournament. Particularly their style of play.

Reacting to their third-place finish at the tournament in Morocco, Peseiro said Nigeria as one of the giants in Africa is always expected to win the AFCON.

” Nigeria is a big football country in Africa and every tournament comes with expectations. You are expected to get to the final of the AFCON and we did that two years ago. Best finish in a while. I see the team finished third at the last tournament”, he said in an interview in Portugal.
