Presidency Cautions Peter Obi Over ‘Collapsed Democracy’ Remarks

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has criticized former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for his recent comments suggesting that democracy in Nigeria has collapsed. Onanuga described Obi’s remarks as exaggerated and lacking a solid logical foundation.

Obi made these statements during a colloquium in Abuja, expressing concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democratic institutions. He compared the current situation to previous years, implying a regression in democratic practices.

In response, Onanuga questioned how a democracy that has strengthened over the past 26 years could be deemed collapsed. He emphasized that Obi’s ability to freely express such views is evidence of the functioning democratic space in Nigeria. Onanuga urged Obi to be mindful of his statements and avoid making remarks that could mislead the public.

This exchange highlights the ongoing debate about the health of Nigeria’s democracy and the responsibilities of political leaders in shaping public discourse.
