From Shafa’atu Suleiman, Sokoto

The Sokoto State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has empowered survivors of Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) with business starter kits as part of efforts to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of vulnerable women in the state.

The initiative, which benefitted 40 survivors, includes starter packs for rice cake and tofu production. It followed a five-day intensive livelihood training aimed at rebuilding the women’s confidence and equipping them with sustainable economic skills.

The Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Hajiya Hadiza Ahmed Shagari, while speaking at the distribution event, said the training was designed to help the beneficiaries reclaim their dignity and live with purpose.

“These women have endured trauma and pain, but today marks a new beginning. They are not victims, but survivors stepping into power with knowledge, skills, and the means to rebuild their lives”

She reiterated the ministry’s commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and enabling environment for all women and girls in the state.

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abubakar Zayyana, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Maryam Ahmed Barade, described the empowerment as timely and impactful.

“This initiative goes beyond economic empowerment; it is about restoring hope, improving mental health, and making these women role models in their communities”

He acknowledged the consistent support of the UNFPA in the areas of medical supplies, surgical operations, and infrastructure development, and lauded the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs for its dedication and effective coordination of programs affecting women and children.

“I commend the ministry for embracing this opportunity with an open heart. This gesture is a clear demonstration of your commitment to women’s welfare,” he added.

In addition to the starter kits, 100 women also received Mama Kits and Caesarean Section (CS) packs, which are essential for safe childbirth.

Receiving the CS packs on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Chief Medical Director of Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital, Dr. Hadiza Tore, praised the continuous collaboration between the ministry and UNFPA, describing it as a strong pillar of support for the hospital and the welfare of women and children in the state.

In his goodwill message, the State Programme Officer of UNFPA, Musa Muhammad Wamakko, urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the empowerment materials.

“UNFPA remains committed to supporting the government in improving the health, dignity, and rights of women and girls in Sokoto State and across Nigeria,” Wamakko said.
