Tinubu delays Ogun visit, heads to Jos after attacks

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has postponed his scheduled visit to Iperu, Ogun State, to flag off operations at the Gateway International Cargo Airport and will instead travel to Jos, Plateau State, to commiserate with the government and people over the recent gun attacks that claimed the lives of innocent citizens.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President, who had initially planned to be in Ogun State on Wednesday, will now begin a four-state visit with a stop in Jos, the Plateau State capital, before proceeding to Lagos to observe Good Friday.

The change in itinerary underscores his administration’s focus on the security and humanitarian fallout from the deadly attacks in Plateau, which have triggered a state-wide security review and a curfew in parts of Jos.

From Plateau, the President will travel to Lagos, where he is expected to continue the Easter holiday.

On Saturday, April 4, Tinubu will return to Ogun State to commission the Gateway International Cargo Airport and inaugurate two commercial aircraft dedicated to the export and import of goods, aimed at boosting the state’s economic growth. He will also inaugurate the new edifice of the Federal Operations Unit of the Nigerian Customs Service and its operational vehicles during the same trip.

In Lagos, the President will commission several infrastructure projects under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, including the iconic Ojota/Opebi Link Bridge, the Lagos State Geographic Information System (LAGIS) Building, the Multi-Agency Complex named after the President, and a new school complex.

The President will round off the Easter-period tour with a visit to Bayelsa State on April 10 to commission completed projects under Governor Duoye Diri’s administration before returning to Abuja.

Onanuga, in the statement, described the shift in the President’s schedule as a reflection of his “deep concern” for Plateau’s security situation and his “commitment to solidarity with affected communities” across the country.
