President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu on his groundbreaking appointment as Acting General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), describing it as a landmark achievement for Nigeria and West Africa.
The appointment, announced on 29 March 2025, makes Adamu the first Nigerian to hold this top administrative post since CAF’s founding in 1957. Stepping in after Veron Mosengo-Omba’s departure, Adamu previously served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he spearheaded major competitions that raised the bar for African football.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Adamu’s “track record of excellence, professionalism, and dedication.” He highlighted the timing of the role amid Nigeria’s renewed push for sports development, youth empowerment and global competitiveness.
“This is a proud moment for Nigeria and the West African subregion — a significant milestone affirming our enduring leadership in African football,” the President said. He expressed full confidence in Adamu’s ability to leverage his experience for CAF’s growth across its 54 member associations.
Tinubu wished Adamu success and pledged Nigeria’s unwavering support in this historic role.
