President Bola Tinubu has appointed Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), succeeding Nkiruka Maduekwe, who was the pioneer head of the Council since June 2024.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Majekodunmi, a climate finance expert and environmental lawyer with over 17 years of experience, previously served as the NCCC’s Financial Adviser. She has worked extensively with global and national institutions on renewable energy, carbon markets, and climate governance. Her appointment reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s commitment to addressing climate change not only as an environmental necessity but also as a driver of sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion.

Maduekwe’s appointment last year was part of President Tinubu’s broader agenda to strengthen Nigeria’s climate governance. Approved in June 2024, she initially served in an acting capacity pending confirmation by the NCCC Supervisory Council.

At 39, she brought over 15 years of national and international experience in climate policy development and project implementation, holding a bachelor’s degree in law, a master’s in environmental law and policy from the University of Dundee, UK, and a doctorate in law from the University of Hull, UK.

Prior to her appointment as DG, she served as Nigeria’s National Coordinator for the Climate Parliament, a global legislative network advancing climate solutions.

The presidency highlighted that her role was critical to actualising Nigeria’s green industrial vision, boosting investor confidence, and unlocking sustainable economic value through climate finance instruments.

She was also appointed co-chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on the National Carbon Market Activation Plan, reflecting her expertise and leadership in climate market frameworks.

President Tinubu thanked Maduekwe for her dedicated service and the strong foundation she established for the Council’s growth. Under her leadership, Nigeria took important steps to unlock climate funds and align climate finance with national economic strategies, advancing the country’s net-zero emissions target.
