Donald Trump on Sunday announced the successful recovery of a US airman in Iran, calling the mission “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. history.”
“This brave warrior was behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran, being hunted down by our enemies,” Trump said on Truth Social.
“He sustained injuries, but he will be just fine. This miraculous operation follows another successful rescue yesterday, which we did not confirm to avoid jeopardising the second mission.”
The announcement coincided with Iran launching missiles and drones at Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, and Abu Dhabi, a day after Trump warned Tehran it had 48 hours to strike a deal or face “all Hell.”
Iranian media reported five fatalities during the US rescue operations. While Iran claimed its forces had downed the aircraft, US authorities have not confirmed whether it was shot down.
The ongoing conflict, sparked on February 28 by US-Israeli strikes in Iran, has disrupted oil shipping, with Iran blocking the Strait of Hormuz and continuing attacks across the Gulf.
A strike on a petrochemical hub in Khuzestan province killed five, according to local officials.
“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to make a deal or open up the Hormuz Strait,” Trump wrote.
“Time is running out, 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them.”
Iran’s General Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi dismissed the warning as “helpless, nervous, unbalanced and stupid,” adding, “the gates of hell will open for you.”
In Lebanon, Hezbollah claimed a cruise missile strike on an Israeli warship, while residents near the Israeli border described constant bombardment.
“People are terrified, and the sound of gunfire has not stopped for a moment since last night. We are putting our trust in God,” said resident Joseph Attieh.
Meanwhile, a strike near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant killed a guard, prompting Russia to evacuate 198 workers. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that further attacks could trigger radioactive fallout across Gulf capitals.
Former IAEA chief Mohamed El-Baradei urged Gulf nations to act before the region “turns into a ball of fire.”
